Original Penguin Clothing – History

The penguin logo came about in 1955 when a salesman for the American company Munsingwear – who then sold military clothing and underwear was in New York. In the front window of a taxidermist he caught sight of a flock of penguins and decided to buy one which he took to a sales meeting.

Munsingwear brand eventually changed direction and became more and more focused on sports. When they needed to create a logo that suited the new spirit, it was clear – it was a penguin who would adorn garments. It was not long before the Arctic mammals began to appear on polo shirts and just as quickly became loved by golfers, and appeared all at once on the breast pocket of golfers up and down the states.

The label was shut down in the 90s but the desire for the penguin garments remained among fashionistas who desperately dug around in vintage stores to find the original garment. One of these was the Urban Outfitters Purchasing Manager Chris Kolbe who eventually gave up the chase and contacted the principal owner, Perry Ellis, with the objective of reviving the brand. Kolbe – who is now chief designer of the Original Penguin – got what he wanted and in 2003 the penguin made his much awaited comeback!. When the brand was resurrected Kolbe gave it a more sporty and street-influenced look than before.

1851, the English tailor John Emary decided to try to remedy the English gentleman’s longstanding source of concern; weather. In his shop at 46 Regent Street he began to experiment with different techniques to produce a water-resistant wool, and two years later he took a patent on a fabric which he christened Aquascutum, water shield in Latin. He also took the chance to register a company under the same name, and it was not long before the first rain coats from Aquascutum were found on the upper class gents, walking in the areas around Mayfair. Word got around, and a year later when Britain went into the Crimean War, rain coats from Aquascutum were the given choice of officers to protect against the elements.

In 1970 Aquascutum introduced the now famous club check pattern in brown and blue, which has become synonymous with the brand of sophisticated, understated style. Although Aquascutum has been on the fashion radar for several decades, it was not until 2005 that the first catwalk collection was launched, led by designer duo Michael Herz and Graeme Fidler. Clothing label Bjorn Borg’s story continues where the tennis player stops. The year is 1983 and Björn Borg puts his Fila-outfit and his tennis rackets on the shelf, to instead join the crowd of tennis legends with their own clothing line on the list of achievements. The Swedish Wimbledon champion had the right pre-requisites, hailed as a style icon for his time and in the newspapers at least as often outside the tennis court as on it. But unlike his predecessors, Rene Lacoste and Fred Perry, he chose to bet on anything other than polo shirts. Tight, tight – April 77. With early punk and with the bands Ramones and Joy Division as an inspiration April 77 from Paris was born in 2002. Ever since the beginning, there was clarity from this cult brand – to tell the story of rock ‘n’ roll with a narrow silhouette. The cuts, details and model names salute all the genres, starting from the 50’s.  The fashion label is now a record label too. The design Pen at April 77 is held by Frenchman Brice Partouche in and the brands name is from the designer’s birth year and month.

Partouche began selling narrow jeans sold in underground circles in Paris, but now April 77’s clothes are found in some of the world’s hottest shops. Although April77 is incredibly strongly influenced by the rock ‘n’ roll scene, do not expect to find stereotypes from Guns N Roses and Megadeath  - rather tight jeans and slim jackets.

Love of music has also resulted in a collaboration with iconic guitar manufacturer Gibson. A specially designed Gibson Jeans sold with accompanying guitar cases on the Dover Street Market, London. One of the trademarks of the label is a plectrum (Le Pique!) which you will find  in the little fifth pocket of the jeans.

Functional Garments may be a no no among the most fanatical fashion people, but it  is not really on the catwalk  that the Swedish clothing brand Peak Performance comes into its own. Peak Performance makes clothes to withstand the weather rather than critical glances in the city.

Peak Performance is primarily clothing for the mountains and the golf course, even if other outdoor activities in recent years are also being catered for by the brand. Peak Performance was founded in Åre, North Sweden in 1986 by Stefan Engström (now CEO of J. Lindeberg) and Peter Blom. The logo for the brand is a large P and one criticism For Him have of the collections is that this is not a brand for those people who don’t want to act as an advertiser for the clothes. It seems a bit un-Swedish in our eyes to have the logo so prominent.

Peak Performance is nevertheless a successful business, which in 2009 has 77 own stores (including franchises), 1 800 dealers and sales in over 20 countries. With stores in several alp resorts, “peak” has positioned itself as a serious ski manufacturer, with sponsorship deals for some of the leading ski and board athletes.
